The Emerald Lakes are a popular attraction located in the Tongariro National Park in New Zealand. The lakes are known for their vibrant green color and are a result of minerals leaching from the surrounding rocks.
There is no admission fee to visit the Emerald Lakes, as they are part of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike. The hike is free, but a permit is required and can be obtained from the Department of Conservation website.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a full day hike that takes approximately 7-8 hours to complete. The best time to visit the Emerald Lakes is during the summer months (December-February), as the track can be closed during the winter due to snow and ice.
In addition to the Emerald Lakes, there are several other attractions to see in the Tongariro National Park. The park is home to three active volcanoes: Mount Tongariro, Mount Ruapehu, and Mount Ngauruhoe. Visitors can also explore the Taranaki Falls, Tawhai Falls, and the Whakapapa Ski Area.
For more information on the Tongariro National Park and the Emerald Lakes, visit the Department of Conservation website at www.doc.govt.nz.
